Donald E. Hopp, 80, of Hawarden, died suddenly on Sunday, Sept. 9, 2007, at the Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City.

Donald Eugene Hopp was born Nov. 18, 1926, in Moville, the son of Edward and Gertrude (Albert) Hopp. He was confirmed at Salem Lutheran Church in Correctionville. Donald married Darlene Scott in 1948 in Elk Point, S.D.

He was inducted into the U.S. Army on Jan. 26, 1955, and discharged Jan. 4, 1957.

Donald later married Dorothy Ann Gerrietts on April 12, 1958 in Le Mars. The couple made their home in Le Mars. She died in 1988. He married Lois Edmunds on Sept. 22, 1990 in Hawarden, where they made their home together. Donald was employed for 46 years with Sioux Tools in Sioux City, retiring on March 22, 1991.

He was a lifetime member of the Wasmer American Legion Post #241 of Le Mars and a member of the United Methodist Church in Hawarden. He enjoyed doing stain glass, working on his lawn, in the garden and with his roses. Donald liked traveling with his family, cooking, and especially enjoyed walking downtown with his wife Lois. He square danced for over 30 years.

Survivors include his wife, Lois; daughter, Claudette Barr of Spirit Lake; step-daughter, Pam Schuller and husband Keith of Hawarden; step daughter, Shelley Edmunds of Hawarden; five grandchildren, Paul Rydell, John and Nicki Rydell, Rich and Veronica Doede all of Spencer, Amanda and Alexandria Batchelder of Hawarden; three great-grandchildren; a brother, Wayne and his wife Emma of Monte Sereno, Calif.; three sisters, Phyllis and Joe Moss of Atlanta, Ga., Noma and James Martin of Santa Clara, Calif., and Charlene and Jim Pederson of Omaha, Neb.; and many nieces and nephews.

Donald was also preceded in death by his parents; and an infant sister, Marlene June Hopp.

Funeral Service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church in Hawarden with the Rev. Tim Walker officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Cemetery in Le Mars, with graveside military rites by the Wasmer American Legion Post #241 of Le Mars. Visitation will begin at noon Wednesday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m. at the Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden.
