John W. Morton, 87, of Le Mars, died Thursday, Nov. 8, 2007, at Plymouth Manor Care Center in Le Mars.

John W. Morton was born Oct. 25, 1920, the son of Earl and Agnes (Hoyt) Morton at Le Mars. He graduated from Union Township Consolidated School in 1938, then attended Western Union College (Westmar) and the University of Iowa before coming home to Union Township to farm.

John and Mildred Manson were united in marriage Aug. 16, 1943, at the Union Township Presbyterian Church. John enjoyed singing in the University of Iowa Chorus, the Union Township Chorus, Le Mars Barber shoppers and with several men's quartets.

Besides farming, John was active in school activities, serving on the Union and Remsen-Union School Boards for 22 years. He attended Union Township Presbyterain Church where he sang many solos with Mildred as pianist.

He is survived by his wife Mildred of Le Mars; four children: Scott of Colorado Springs, Colo., Terry of Fayetteville, Ark., Reg of Baton Rouge, La., and Jill Morton Board of Oakridge, Ore.; 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; two sisters Margaret McQueen of Marcus, and Phyllis Bolton of Menahga, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services were at 10:30 a.m. today (Monday) at Mauer - Johnson Funeral Home of Le Mars. Burial followed at Union Township Cemetery. Visitation began at 12 noon Sunday at the Mauer - Johnson Funeral Home of Le Mars with the family present from 2 to 5 p.m. There was also one hour of visitation at the funeral home prior to the service on Monday.
