Henry C. Mohning, 73, of Le Mars, died Monday, Feb. 11, 2008, at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars.

Henry C. Mohning was born Nov. 6, 1934, in Marion Township, Plymouth County, the son of Louis Henry and Wilhelmina (Wiebke) Mohning. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church in Le Mars. Henry attended country school before transferring to Le Mars for high school.

He was drafted into the United States Army on Aug. 13, 1954 and served as a heavy equipment operator in Germany. He earned his honorable discharge on July 31, 1956, having attained the rank of SP3. After his military service, he worked as a carpenter.

On June 21, 1959 Henry married Sandra Conner at St. John's Lutheran Church in Le Mars. Henry worked as a plumber for 30 years with Ray Sherlock. In 1993 he suffered a stroke and was forced to retire. He enjoyed fishing and spending time with his children and grandchildren.

Henry will be lovingly remembered by his son David Mohning of Le Mars; a daughter Becky Sitzmann and her husband Jason of Hinton; grandchildren Daniel, Natalie and Adam Mohning of Sioux Center, Kyle, Brady, Corey and Courtney Sitzmann of Hinton, Jessica Mohning of Le Mars and Emily Vos of Hinton; three brothers Merlin and Marge Mohning of Paonia, Colo., Louis F. Mohning of Remsen and Raymond Mohning of Kingsley; two sisters Alverna Lowrey of Mariposa, Calif., and Esther Sjobakken of Stanton, Calif.; a sister-in-law Hilda Mohning of Le Mars; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son Randy; a brother Arnold Mohning; two sisters and their husbands Helen and Ronald Utesch and Norma and Floyd Miller; a sister-in-law Lillian Mohning.

Funeral services will take place at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Le Mars. The Rev. Gary Landsness will officiate. Burial will follow at Resthaven Memory Gardens in Le Mars. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. today (Wednesday), at the Mauer - Johnson Funeral Home. The family will be present from 5 to 7 p.m. with a prayer service scheduled for 6:30 p.m. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church prior to the funeral.
