GRANVILLE, Iowa -- Marcel J. Schuver, 80, of Granville died Friday, Feb. 8, 2008, at Orange City Area Health System Hospital in Orange City, Iowa.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Granville, with the Rev. Richard D. Ball, concelebrating Monsignor Kenneth Seifried and the Rev. Edmund Tieddeman officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Granville. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. today, with a 5 p.m. rosary by St. Joseph Guild, and a vigil prayer service at 7:30 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Fisch Funeral Home in Remsen, Iowa.

Marcel was born Dec. 7, 1927, in rural Granville, the son of Anton and Christina (Nemmers) Schuver. He was raised and educated in the Granville area. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II from April 10, 1946, until his honorable discharge, May 3, 1947. He was then engaged in farming with his father near Granville.

On Jan 8, 1951, he married Gwen Miller at Granville. They farmed in the Granville area, where Marcel was a longtime Sioux County cattle feeder and a great steward of the land and his livestock. He farmed with his sons in the cattle operation known as Poverty Acres Feedlot until 1997, when the couple moved into Granville. He served four terms as mayor of the city of Granville until his health failed.

He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. Marcel enjoyed fishing, bowling and attending baseball games. He was a big supporter of Spalding Catholic School.

Survivors include his wife, Gwen of Granville; five sons and three daughters, Doug and his wife, Shelley of Granville, Jim and his wife, Connie of West Bend, Iowa, Cindy and her husband, Rod Pottebaum and Tony and his wife, Lori, all of Alton, Iowa, Carol Glendenning of Mount Ayr, Iowa, Jan and her husband, Rick Dehner of Hinton, Iowa, John and his wife, Kathy and Marc Jr., all of Granville; 15 grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Wanda Schuver of Sanborn, Iowa; two brothers-in-law, Francis Murphy of Granville, and Tom and his wife, Kathy Miller of Walker, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two daughters, Beverly Ann, in infancy and Ellen Schuver; a granddaughter, Morgan Schuver; a sister, Marjorie Murphy; and a brother, Raymond.

Pallbearers will be Daniel Schuver, Jeremy Schuver, Katie Huff, Ethan Schuver, Jacob Glendenning, Sara Dehner and Jacob Rus.
