GRETCHEN HAUFF

MERRILL, Iowa --- Gretchen Rhea Hauff, 53, of Las Vegas, formerly of Merrill, died Wednesday, March 17, 1999, at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center at the Swedish Hospital in Seattle, Wash., from complication of a bone marrow transplant for the treatment of leukemia.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Sioux City with the Rev. Verdrey Kerr officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery in Merrill. Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in LeMars.

Ms. Hauff was born Aug. 15, 1945, in Sioux City, the daughter of Warren and Elizabeth “Betty” Hauff. She was raised in Merrill and graduated from LeMars Central High School in 1963.

She attended Westmar College and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in physical education and later attended the University of Wisconsin at Whitewater, Wis., where she received her master’s degree in health education.

She taught at Johnson Creek, Wis., on an Indian Reservation in New Mexico, coached Women’s Basketball at Westmar College in LeMars, and in 1987 moved to Las Vegas, where she taught physical education at Grant Sawyer Middle school. While coaching at Westmar, she helped guide the 1973-1974 Eagles to the best season on record.

She enjoyed playing tennis, bicycling, golf and many other outdoor activities.

Survivors include her parents; a sister and brother-in-law, Sara Jane Hauff and her husband, the Rev. Ronald Osborne of Sioux City and Waterloo, Iowa; a brother Timothy Hauff of Bangkok, Thailand; four nieces and nephews; and six great nieces and great nephews.

She was preceded in death by a brother, David Hauff, on June 10, 1981.
