MERRILL, Iowa -- Frieda Lake, 91, of Merrill died Saturday, Feb. 9, 2002, at Plymouth Manor Care Center in Le Mars, Iowa.

Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. John Lutheran Church in Merrill, with the Rev. Dr. Klaus Raab officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery in Merrill. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. Tuesday, with family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars.

Mrs. Lake was born Sept. 25, 1910, in Eureka, Kan., the daughter of Henry and Emma (Senn) Schmid. She spend most of her childhood on a farm west of Merrill and attended country school. She married Mearl Robert Lake on Dec. 4, 1929, at St. John Lutheran Church in Merrill. The couple operated a dairy farm near Merrill until Mearl's death on Oct. 25, 1986. She continued to live in Merrill until becoming a resident at Plymouth Manor Care Center on Feb. 17, 1997.

She was an avid gardener and loved flowers. She liked to bake, sew, play cards and have family dinners. She was active in the Lutheran church where she served as a Sunday school teacher for 25 years.

She will be lovingly remembered by her son and his wife, Darrell and Joyce Lake of Sioux City; two grandchildren, Janna Burchard of Merrill, and Douglas Lake of Sioux City; a great-grandchild, Jerica Burchard of Merrill; three sisters-in-law, Eunice Schmid of Kingsley, Iowa, Marjorie Schmid of Merrill, and Roberta Schmid of Two Harbors, Mich.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She also was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Martha Trometer; four brothers, Oscar, Fred, Roy and Ernie Schmid; a sister-in-law, Irene Schmid; and a granddaughter, Deanna Lake.
