Melvin Peter Holtz, 66, of Sioux City died Tuesday, Aug. 3, 2004, at a Sioux City hospital following a lengthy illness.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel, with the Rev. Del Olivier of Augustana Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery, Merrill, Iowa, with military rites conducted by the Merrill American Legion Oleson-Halweg Post 125. Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the funeral home.

Mr. Holtz was born Aug. 3, 1938, in Sioux City, the son of Charles "Arthur" and Fayth Veva (Norton) Holtz. He was a lifelong Sioux City resident. He served in the U.S. Army during the mid-1950s.

He was employed with several local packing houses for more than 22 years, among them Cunningham and later Floyd Valley. Most recently, he was employed with Jolly Time Popcorn, retiring in December 2001.

He was a member of Merrill American Legion Oleson-Halweg Post 125. He was an antique car enthusiast. He enjoyed playing guitar, harmonica and accordion. He also enjoyed baseball, bowling and golf, but mainly he was a devoted family man.

Survivors include his children and their spouses, Chris and Todd Trapp of Omaha, Jeff and Tammy Holtz of Palm City, Fla., Shelly and Anthony Beamon of Sioux City, Randall Holtz of Sioux City, and Stacie and Mike White of Sioux City; his dear friend, Constance Holtz of Sioux City; seven brothers and spouses, Arthur Holtz of Merrill, Jim and Delphine Holtz of Rochester, Minn., Harlan and Vickie Holtz of Sioux Falls, S.D., Dale and Donna Holtz of Merrill, Marvin and Brenda Holtz of Moville, Iowa, Louis Holtz of Sioux City and Jon Holtz of Merrill; six sisters and spouses, Betty Ahlf of Hinton, Iowa, Darlene Vickie of Litchfield, Minn., Carol and Dan Gazinski of Omaha, Judy Diller of Litchfield, Minn., Janet and Don Doyle of Sioux City and Mary Jane Norton of Sioux City; 11 grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Allyn and Bob Holtz.

Pallbearers will be Michael Holtz, Bradley Holtz, Chad Holtz, Randall Holtz, Danny Norton and Gary Holtz. Honorary pallbearers will be Steven Schoenherr, Curtis Holtz, Bob Zink, Dustin Holtz, Timothy Ahlf and David Allyn Homolka.
