Erma C. Hummel
Erma C. Hummel, 84, Hawarden, died Tuesday, Oct. 17, 1989 at the Hillcrest Care Center in Hawarden.
Services were held at 10:30 a.m. Friday in the United Methodist church in Hawarden. Rev. Paul Hansen officiated. Burial was in Riverside cemetery in Akron, under direction of Porter-Dow Funeral home in Hawarden.
Pallbearers were: Matt Hummel, Brad Hummel, Chad Swanson, Michael Cauwels, Tom Tilgner, and Elwood Iverson.
Mrs. Hummel, the former Erma Clarabelle Waterbury, was born June 5, 1905, to Fred and Mabel Chandler Waterbury in Plymouth county, Iowa, near Akron. She attended school in Akron and graduated from the Akron high school in 1924. She attended Morningside College in Sioux City and taught school in rural Akron. She married Clarence Hummel Aug. 4, 1928. the couple lived near Westfield and then farmed in Union county, S.D. In 1952 they moved to Akron and lived there until 1968 when they retired and moved to Hawarden. She was employed at Booth Drug in Hawarden for 18 years. Mr. Hummel died Oct. 22, 1993.
Mrs. Hummel was a member of the United Methodist church in Hawarden; Vesper Chapter Order of Eastern Star, Roving Gardeners club of Akron and Krafty Kats. She was past worthy matron of OES and past president of WSCS.
Survivors include two sons, Harlan of Annsdale, Va., and Donny of Hawarden; a daughter, Mrs. Arnold (Kathleen) Swanson of Waterloo; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
