Clarence Hummel
Clarence A. Hummel, 69. of Hawarden, died Oct. 22 at the Hawarden Hospital after a long illness. Services were at 10 a.m. Oct. 24 at the United Methodist Church in Hawarden, Rev. Herbert Gould officiated. Burial was in Riverside Cemetery at Akron under direction of the Dow Funeral Home of Hawarden. Freedom Lodge AF&AM conducted graveside rites.
Honorary pallbearers were: J. A. Jenson, S. E. Siebens, Keith K. Knapp, Gerald F. Smith, Floyd Fletcher and Dr. C. R. Mason. Active pallbearers were: Gaynor Harris, Allen VanderHelm, Cyril Larsen, Portor Maynard, Fred Claesson, Jr. and Paul Woskoff.
Mr. Hummel was born May 11, 1904, at Westfield. He married Erma Waterbury of Akron Aug. 4, 1928. He was in the lumber business at Westfield for several years, then farmed near Akron. He moved to Akron in 1952 where he managed Farmers Coop Elevator for 16 years.
Mr. Hummel served several years as a member of the Sayles District School Board and was active in community affairs. He was an Akron city councilman. He was past master of Freedom Lodge AF&AM of Akron and past Chapter, Order of Eastern Star, Akron. the couple returned to Hawarden in 1968.
Survivors include the widow; a daughter, Mrs. Arnold (Kathleen) Swanson of Waterloo; two sons, Harlan and Donny, both of Hawarden; eight grandchildren; six sister, Mrs. Don (Edith) Secor of Chico, Calif., Mrs. George (Anne) Schultz of Kalispell, Mont., Mrs. Chester (Helen) Esiele of Juanita, Nebr.., Mrs. Henning (Sophia) Hansen of Hendricks, Minn., Mrs. Ted (Esther) Carlson of Sioux City, and Mrs. Charles (Elsie) Holzworth of Camp Hill, Pa., and three brothers, Lyle of Kalispell, Mont., Kenneth of Des Moines and William of Anchorage, Alaska.
