Matthew J. Gale

Matthew James Gale, 81, of Akron, Iowa, died Sunday, September 26, 1999 at St. Luke's Regional Medical Center following a lengthy illness.

Services were held Thursday, September 30, 1999 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Akron with Monsignor Richard Zenk officiating. Burial was in St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery in Akron, with military graveside rites conducted by Hoschler American Legion Post #186 of Akron. Schroeder Funeral Home, Akron, was in charge of arrangements.

Pallbearers were Greg Bellwood, Donald Gale, Bruce Koele, Kenneth McMillian, Virgil Smith, Robert Voss, and Arden Gale.

Mr. Gale was born on February 2, 1918 in Akron, Iowa, the son of Lawrence and Catherine McManaman Gale. He grew up and attended school in the Akron area. In January of 1942, he entered the U.S. Army and served during World War II in the Pacific with the 766th Tank Battalion at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii and with the occupation forces in Japan. Following his discharge from the military service in 1945, he farmed in the Akron area for several years before going to work for Christiansen Bros. Construction of Cherokee, Iowa, where he worked until his retirement in 1981.

He married Lucille Bellwood on September 12, 1946 in Akron.

Mr. Gale enjoyed his grandchildren, the outdoors, camping, and gardening. He was an avid fan of athletics. He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church of Akron and a member of the Hoschler American Legion Post #186 of Akron for over fifty years.

Survivors include his wife, a son, James Gale and his wife, Marilyn of Algona, Iowa; three grandchildren; one brother, Orville, of Sioux City, Iowa; three sister, Madeline Burke of Sioux City, Ia., Gertrude DiMascio and her husband, Phil of El Monte, Calif., and Eileen Gibeau and her husband, David of Reno, Neb.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sister, Agnes Gale and Marcella Pick; and three brothers, Donald, Joseph, and Francis.
