Virgil Varenhorst

LE MARS, Iowa -- Virgil Varenhorst, 53, of Le Mars died Wednesday, June 18, 2003, at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars.

Memorial services will be 7:30 p.m. today at Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars, with the Rev. Gary Landsness of St. John's Lutheran Church in Le Mars officiating. Burial will be at a later date in St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery, Craig, Iowa. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with the family present from 4 p.m. until service time, at the funeral home.

Virgil John Varenhorst was born Aug. 5, 1949, near Le Mars, to Harry and Eva (Herman) Varenhorst. He attended country school near Merrill, Iowa, and junior high in Merrill. He graduated from Le Mars Community High School in 1967. He enlisted in the Iowa Air National Guard in Sioux City and worked with Dubuque Meat Packing in Le Mars.

In the late 1970s, he was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis and in 1988, he moved to Le Mars. He moved to the Floyd Valley Apartments in the late 1990s and to Brentwood Good Samaritan Center in 2000.

He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church and American Legion Oleson-Halweg Post 125 in Merrill. He loved fishing when he was able.
He will be lovingly remembered by his mother, Eva of Le Mars; a brother and his wife, Gene and Kathi of Woodstock, Ga.; two sisters, Joan and her husband, Dennis Ernst, and Mary Lenz, all of Le Mars; six nieces and nephews, Justin Boyd, Tiffany and her husband, Michael Gunter, Dena and her husband, Bill Fender, Kimberly Ernst, Christa Lenz and John Lenz; two great-nieces and great-nephews, Chad Gunter and Michaela Fender; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins; and a long-time friend, Terry Utesch of Le Mars.

He was preceded in death by his father, Harry on Jan. 15, 1991; and his grandparents.
