Obituary - William George Taylor

The following obituary of the late William George Taylor is contributed by a friend.

William George Taylor was born in Liberty Township, Grant County, Wis., February 24th, 1874, and departed this life the evening of July 6th, 1923 at the community hospital, LeMars, where he had been for two weeks, aged 49 years, 4 months, and 11 days.

He was the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Taylor. In 1883 he, with his parents moved to Plymouth County, Iowa, where he has lived ever since.

In 1896 he graduated from LeMars Normal School. Mr. Taylor taught school for several terms and has farmed quite extensively in this community, and was considered as one of the most successful farmers of large holding in this community.

On March 24, 1920, he was married to Miss Bertha Ott, and to this union were born two children, Mildred and Wesley.

He and his wife united with the Church of the United Brethren in Christ, at Adaville, which is the home church of his parents, and where he had taught the Young Men's Sunday School class, and to which he was very loyal and faithful and in which he took a great interest. Many hearts have been inspired with his kind zeal and fidelity to the cause of Christ, with his earnest scholarly presentations in the Sunday School lessons, and with his consistent Christian life. The neighbors and friends whom to know him was to admire him.

For some time he had been afflicted with high blood pressure and was at the community hospital in January of this year and seemed to be relieved for awhile, but within the past few weeks his strength and usual vitality seemed to fail and he returned to the hospital. He was patient in his affliction, never complaining but many times indicating that his will was blended to God's will, and that he was ready to go if God willed, and he said to his wife, “I feel like Paul probably felt when he wrote: 'For I am now ready to be offered and the time of my departure is at hand, I have fought the good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith. Henceforth, there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day, and not only to me, but unto all them also that love his appearing.'”

He was a dutiful son, a good brother, a loving husband and a kind father, and accommodating neighbor, an honored citizen, and a Christian of sterling qualities.

He is survived by his wife, two children, his mother, three sisters, one brother and other relatives. Two sisters, Mrs. Frank Gabel and Mrs. George Gabel, all reside in this community. He will also be missed by a host of friends.
The funeral services were conducted at Adaville church by the pastor, O. O. Hobson, and directed by Mr. A. B. Barnett, funeral director of Merrill, and the body was laid to rest in Pleasant Valley Cemetery.

We had known him. George and we were neighbors all our lives except 6 years we live in California(?). George was also our Day Teacher (School) gave us many a ride home when he drove a team to the sled, sometime he rode horseback to school, especially when he taught the Tindall school. We all thought a great deal of him. Was so glad when he and Bertha were married as Bertha and I were such good friends. So sorry to hear of their deaths so young and to leave their dear lovely children. But such is life, we can plan but they are easily broke.
