From the LeMars Sentinel, Thursday, April 19, 1883, Page 4, Column 2:

We are pained to announce the death of our worthy neighbor, Mr. John Detloff, who died Friday evening, the 13th inst. John was among our early settlers, and had, by hard toil, succeeded in making a fine home on sec. 21. He was in the prime of life, and loved all who knew him. Our whole community extend sympathy to the bereaved wife and relatives.

Note from Contributor:
John was 35 years of age at the time of his death.

An 1880 Census showed John Detloff Married; his father born in Germany; his wife was Fredericka Moellmann, age 32, born in Germany; his son Willie, age 2, born in Iowa. Also in John's household was Joseph Reben, age 23, hired man, born in Germany.

Plymouth County Iowa Cemetery Records show an infant son, Frederick, was born in 1880, but died. Also, another son, Adolph A. D., died in 1881.
