MAVIS HANNO

Mavis Hanno, 66, Sheldon, a former LeMars resident and longtime school teacher, died Thursday (Aug. 4, 1988) at Sioux Valley Hospital, Cherokee, after a long illness.

The body was donated to the University of Iowa. There will be no services. The Vander Ploeg Funeral Home at Sheldon had charge of arrangements.

Miss Hanno taught school in rural Plymouth County; at Dickens, Iowa; Primghar, Sheldon and Sioux City. She retired at Sheldon after 43 years of teaching.

Survivors are nieces and nephews.

MAVIS I. HANNO

Mavis I. Hanno, 66, died Aug. 4, 1988, at Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital at Cherokee after many months of health problems.

Born at Remsen Sept. 15, 1921, to Gustav Hanno and Anna C. Lang Hanno, she attended rural school and graduated from Remsen High School in 1938.

She taught rural school in Elgin and Henry Townships in Plymouth county and Primghar and Sheldon.

She graduated from Westmar College in 1955 with a bachelor’s degree. She taught in Sioux City Community Schools from 1952 until January 1981, with a 3-month leave of absence to teach in the Army Dependent Schools in Baumholder and Mainz, Germany.

She is survived by one sister, Lois (Mrs. Emanuel Schmidt) of Worthington, Minn., and ten nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Earl and Roy, and two sisters, Irma (Mrs. Clarence Haack) and Vera (Mrs. C. G. Hammer.)

Mavis willed her body to the University of Iowa for anatomical research. There will be no funeral or memorial service at this time.

A private burial will be held at a later date in the family plot in Remsen City Cemetery.
