REMSEN, Iowa -- Milton Galles, 83, of Remsen died Saturday, Feb. 12, 2005, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Remsen, with the Rev. Timothy Johnson officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Remsen. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with a parish rosary at 3 p.m., a vigil prayer service at 7:30 p.m. and a rosary by the Knights of Columbus at 8 p.m., at Fisch Funeral Home in Remsen.

Milton was born Nov. 5, 1921, in rural Remsen, the son of Michael and Anna (Schneiders) Galles. He was raised in the Remsen area, where he received his first two years of education at St. Mary's Catholic School in Remsen. In 1930, he moved with his family to near Granville, Iowa, where he received his education in the rural school system until the seventh grade. He received his eighth grade of education at St. Mary's Catholic School in Remsen while he resided with his sister and her husband, Evelyn and Martin Pottebaum. He was then a farm laborer in the Remsen area.

On Jan. 3, 1944, he married Arlene Konz at Alton, Iowa. They made their home near Marcus, Iowa, for one year, then moved to near Granville for two years and then to near Struble, Iowa, for two years. In 1951 they moved to a farm near Remsen. They retired on the farm in 1984 and moved into Remsen in 1987.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus and Luxemburger Brotherhood. Milton enjoyed playing pinochle, going to the coffee shop and listening to Nashville music.

Survivors include his wife, Arlene of Remsen; two sons, Dale and his wife, Rose of Marcus and Donald of Remsen; seven daughters and their husbands, Mary and Pete Block of Sioux City, Marilyn and Terry Bunkers, Audrey and Gilbert Weiler Jr. and Karen and Randy Portz, all of Remsen, Carol and Gary Christoffel and Laurie and Alan Schroeder, all of Granville and Bonnie and Stan Meyer of Ireton, Iowa; 42 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Margie Galles of Remsen.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Dustin Christoffel; a granddaughter, Angel Lyn Bunkers; a great-grandson, Travis James Weiler; three brothers, Emmanuel, Arnold and Marvin; and a sister, Evelyn Pottebaum.

Pallbearers will be Matt Galles, Ryan Block, Dan Bunkers, Cory Weiler, Curtis Christoffel and Jeff Schroeder.
