LE MARS, Iowa -- Marvin F. Fischer, 80, of Le Mars died Sunday, March 21, 2004, at Plymouth Manor Care Center in Le Mars.

Visitation will be after 3 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars.

Marvin F. Fischer was born Feb. 17, 1924, on the family farm in Stanton Township, rural Plymouth County, Iowa, to Albert A. and Freda (Seiler) Fischer. He attended country school at Stanton 4 until the eighth grade before attending school in Le Mars. While in high school, he became a charter member of the Future Farmers of America at Le Mars Central High School. He graduated from Le Mars Central High School in 1941. Following high school, he continued farming with his father on the family farm in Stanton Township.

On Jan. 10, 1951, he was united in marriage to Elaine Thompson at Church of the Nazarene in Le Mars. He became the third generation of Fischers to farm in Stanton Township. Along with his farming operation, he had raised purebred Hereford bulls and purebred Hampshire hogs. He had remained active on the Century Farm well into his retirement. He continued to be involved on the farm assisting his son, Keith, who became the fourth generation of Fischers to farm in Stanton Township, until illness in December 2003 prevented his daily trips to the farm. The couple moved to Le Mars in November 1992. Elaine passed away May 9, 1997.

He loved the farm lifestyle. He was truly a steward of the land. He was an accomplished welder and was very mechanically gifted. He was a second generation Lester-Pfeister seed dealer and longtime member of the Plymouth County Farm Bureau. He served the community of Stanton Township as a trustee and clerk for many years.

The couple attended Evangelical United Brethren Church in Stanton Township and later Merrill (Iowa) United Methodist Church. When they moved to Le Mars, they became members of Le Mars Bible Church. His greatest joy in life was his family. He always made time for his grandchildren's activities.

Survivors include his four children, Kathleen and her husband, Dennis Mitchell of Wayne, Neb., Keith Fischer of Merrill, Ruth and her husband, Larry Oetken of Merrill, and Paul Fischer and his wife, Leisha of Merrill; 11 grandchildren; a sister, Violet Schultz of Le Mars; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; a daughter-in-law, Diane Fischer; and a brother-in-law, Marvin Schultz.

Pallbearers will be his grandsons, Jacob Fischer, Jordan Fischer, Seth Fischer, Benjamin Oetken, Trevor Oetken and Shawn Oetken. Honorary pallbearers will be his granddaughters, Bethany Fischer, Marie Fischer, Miranda Fischer, Karie Mitchell and Kelly Mitchell.
