LE MARS, Iowa -- Dean Eberhard, 55, of Le Mars passed away Sunday, May 9, 2004, at his residence.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Johnson Township, rural Merrill, Iowa, with the Rev. Dr. Klaus Raab officiating. Burial will be in St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Thursday, with the family present 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 3 p.m., at Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars. Visitation will resume one hour prior to the service Friday at the church.

Dean Eberhard was born Aug. 15, 1948, at Sacred Heart Hospital in Le Mars, the son of Rudolph and Martha (Herzberg) Eberhard. He attended school near Struble, Iowa, one of the first students to begin a new education program for special needs children. Following his education, he was involved in many vocational training programs prior to his employment with Life Skills Training Center in Le Mars. He was presently employed with Life Skills and thoroughly enjoyed his occupation and co-workers.

He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and participated with his mother when she was able to attend. Music was central to his life. He had an extensive record collection and was fond of country music. A trip to Branson, Mo. and the local country music shows were among some of life's highlights. He never missed an episode of the Lawrence Welk Show or Hee-Haw with Sunday mornings reserved for church programs and hymns on the record player. For the past several years, he had been a resident of the Porter Group Homes in Le Mars.

He will be lovingly remembered by his mother, Martha of Plymouth Manor Care Center in Le Mars; a sister and her husband, Arlene and Melvin Maxwell of Martinsville, Ind.; a brother and his wife, Dale and Betty of Council Bluffs, Iowa; and nieces and nephews, Kevin Maxwell, Kim Maxwell and his wife, Kimberly and their children, Ben and Sam, and Michael Maxwell, all of Martinsville, Ind., Mary and her husband, Michael Biggs and their children, Jordan, Jake and Kendall, of Kansas City, Mo., Laura Eberhard of Chicago, Ill., Thomas Eberhard and his wife, Stacey and their daughter, Keagan of Muscatine, Iowa, Sally and her husband, Greg Landmark and their children, Johanna and Thomas, of Denver, Colo., and Susan and her husband, Mark Martin and their children, Jacey and Josh, of Council Bluffs, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his father on Feb. 11, 1979.
