DAKOTA DUNES, S.D. -- William H. Eberle, 71, of Dakota Dunes died Thursday, May 8, 2003, at a Sioux City hospital following a lengthy illness.

A celebration of Bill's life will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at First Covenant Church, with the Rev. Dan Springer officiating. Visitation and fellowship will follow at the church. Private burial services will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

Bill was born in Hinton, Iowa, on Aug. 6, 1931, to William and Luella (Thompson) Eberle. He was educated in Sioux City Public Schools, graduating from Central High School in 1950. He earned his bachelor of arts degree from Morningside College, master's degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and CPA certificate from the state of Nebraska.

During his professional years, he taught in the Business Department at Morningside College. He was an accountant with Arthur Anderson Accounting, professor and treasurer of Hastings College, Hastings, Neb., controller for the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, treasurer of Briar Cliff University and concluded his 25-year association with Briar Cliff University as professor and chairman of the Business and Accounting Department. One of his joys was teaching and mentoring students and watching them become a credit to their chosen profession.

Bill married Doris Bergstrom of Sioux City on June 8, 1962. Their marriage was blessed with two children, a daughter, Shelley Olson, and a son, Victor Eberle.

He was a very active member of First Covenant Church where he served several terms as chairman of the council, deacon, trustee and was on other various boards. He was a member of the Nebraska Society of CPAs, American Institute of CPAs, former member of Sertoma, Sioux City Library Board, former member and chairman of the Siouxland Economic Development Corporation and Siouxland Residential Board.

The William Eberle Accounting and Business Endowment Fund was established in May 1993 to commemorate his retirement. This fund provides important resources for the Business and Accounting Department in perpetuity, creating a legacy to honor the dedicated services of Professor Eberle to Briar Cliff University.

Survivors include his wife, Doris of Dakota Dunes; a daughter and her husband, Shelley and Cliff Olson of Sioux City; a son Victor Eberle of Jackson, Miss.; a sister, Joyce DeHaan of Sioux City; two grandchildren, Cody and Cambrie Olson; two nieces, Jayne DeHaan of Washington, and Karla McLaren of Monrovia, Calif.; three brothers-in-law and their wives, Harold and Gladys Bergstrom of Omaha, Neb., Harry and Ginny Bergstrom of Somers, Conn., and Stan and Suzanne Bergstrom of Kailua, Hawaii; and many fond friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a nephew.

Honorary pallbearers will be Ilene Netley, Stan Anderson, Don Curry, Malcolm Erickson, John Springer, Vali Sorathia, Reid Jacobsma, George Frangedakis, Bruce Kolbe, Bob Morrisey, John Jackson and Tom Anderson.
