LE MARS, Iowa – Mrs. I. H. (Agnes) Swain, 80, of LeMars died Monday, Dec. 18, 1995, at Floyd Valley Hospital in LeMars following a lingering illness.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. James Catholic Church in LeMars with Rev. Richard Rice officiating. A private burial will be at Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with an Altar Society rosary at 4 p.m. and a Scripture wake service at 7 p.m. at Feuerstein Funeral Home in LeMars.
Mrs. Swain was born Aug. 26, 1915, near Oyens, the daughter of Peter and Mary (Feller) Pletschette. She was raised in the LeMars area and graduated from LeMars High School. She attended Western Union College in LeMars and then taught school in rural LeMars and Marion. On Aug. 31, 1941, she married Ike Swain at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids. The couple lived in Compton, Calif., where she served on the ration board and at the induction center. They lived in Minnesota for several years prior to moving to Miles City, Mont., where they owned and managed a hotel-motel business, including a supper club. They retired to Billings, Mont., in 1974 and moved to LeMars in 1990.
Mrs. Swain was a member of St. James Catholic Church, Christian Mothers, the Altar Society, the church circle and St. Joseph’s Catholic Ladies Guild. She also belonged to bridge and pinochle groups.
Survivors include her husband; two sons and their wives, Frank and Sandy Swain of North Platte, Neb., and Dave and Ardyce Swain of Billings, Mont.; two daughters and their husbands, Eileen and Richard Laterell of Minneapolis and Joan and Robert Lander of Billings; eight grandchildren; and four sisters, Regina Miller of West Point, Neb., Cele Pick of Alton, Helen Bindner of LeMars and Mildred Bindner and her husband, Leonard, of Marcus.
She was also preceded in death by three brothers, Nick and Martin Pletschette and a brother in infancy; five sisters, Clara Loutsch, Mathilda Jochom and Christine Schuster and two sisters in infancy.
