Arrangements are under the direction of Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars.

Milo Gene DeYoung was born June 5, 1949, in Sioux City to Joseph and Charlotte (Sorgdragger) DeYoung. As a young boy, the family lived in the Le Mars area. The DeYoung family moved to Long Beach, Calif., where he graduated from David Star Jordan High School. Following his school, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy on Jan. 15, 1968. He served in the Navy until March 17, 1969, when he was honorably discharged for medical concerns. He later enrolled in culinary school at Long Beach Community College.

He was united in marriage to Christina Ann Dewey on Nov. 6, 1971, in Long Beach. While living in California, the couple were blessed with two children, Jeff and Jennifer. He had worked for the U.S. Post Office in Long Beach for several years. The family moved to Craig in November 1977, and was soon after blessed with the birth of a son, Josh.

He never allowed his health to affect his positive attitude. While living in Craig, he had proudly served as mayor for more than 20 years. While mayor, he improved the infrastructure of the community as well as facilitated the building of Eastman Field and several park improvements. He was designated as the family chef for many family gatherings.

He also cherished the time with his family and grandchildren. He also enjoyed woodworking. He had the gift to develop many friendships. He knew no stranger, only friends.

Survivors include his wife of 32 years, Christina of Le Mars; three children, Jeff DeYoung and his wife, Myra of Le Mars, Jennifer DeYoung of Sioux City and Josh DeYoung and his wife, Brooke of Sioux Falls, S.D.; three grandchildren, Brennan, Emmett and Makenna; his parents, Joseph and Charlotte DeYoung of Craig; six brothers and sisters; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Morgan DeYoung; a brother, Vernon DeYoung; a sister-in-law, Jane Johnson; a brother-in-law, Edward Clement; and Verna Croon.

Pallbearers will be Ernie Moller, Randy DeYoung, Richard DeYoung, Mark Dewey, Jim Grasz, Chuck Van De Water and Jan Wagner.
