LE MARS, Iowa -- Richard C. Dennler, 90, of Le Mars passed away Sunday, Dec. 1, 2002, at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars.

Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Presbyterian United Church of Christ in Le Mars, with the Rev. Timothy Olsen officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Cemetery, Le Mars, with military rites conducted by American Legion Wasmer Post 241 of Le Mars. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a Masonic service at 7 p.m., all at the church. Visitation will resume one hour prior to the service Wednesday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars.

Richard Charles Dennler was born in Le Mars on Sept. 8, 1912, the son of William Edward and Clara Amanda (Mauer) Dennler. He graduated from Merrill High School and Iowa State University, where he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon social fraternity and manager of the ISU basketball team. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in dairy science.

He served his country in the U.S. Army, during World War II. He served overseas in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater at Trinidad and stateside at Camp Miles Standish in Taunton, Mass., a staging area for military troops. He attained the rank of first lieutenant.

On May 17, 1944, he and Louise Mohr were united in marriage in Denver, Colo. The couple made their home in Merrill for 15 years prior to moving to Le Mars in 1964. He was employed with the Iowa State Department of Agriculture for 32 years as a milk sanitarian and later as the director of Dairy Products Control.

He was awarded the Dr. Merle P. Baker Award for meritorious contribution made in the field of milk, food and the public health in Iowa. He was also recognized as a Diplomat of the American Intersociety Academy for Certification of Sanitarians. He was instrumental in getting the Iowa legislature to pass a compulsory pasteurization bill and thereby eliminating milk-borne diseases. He retired in 1977.

He was a member of Presbyterian United Church of Christ, a 50-year member of Floyd Masonic Lodge 537 (formerly Giblem Lodge 322), Scottish Rite Consistory and Abu Bekr Shrine.

He will be lovingly remembered by his son, Bill of Lafayette, Colo.; a daughter and her husband, Jane and Lewis Killebrew of Amarillo, Texas; and five grandchildren, Chris, Katy and Jordan Dennler and Matt and Justin Killebrew.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Louise on May 5, 2001; a brother, William Howard; and two sisters, Leola Dennler and Marian Kissinger.
