CHATSWORTH, Iowa -- John Ludwigs, 82, of Chatsworth died Friday, Nov. 22, 2002, at his daughter's home in Sioux City following a lengthy fight with cancer.

Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Akron, Iowa, with the Rev. Sonja Brucklacher officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery. Visitation will be 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. today, with the family present 4 to 6 p.m. and a prayer service at 5 p.m., all at Schroeder Funeral Home in Akron.

Mr. Ludwigs was born Sept. 15, 1920, near Chatsworth, the son of Henry and Marie (Borchers) Ludwigs.

He married Ruth Olson on Aug. 9, 1973, at St. Matthews Lutheran Church in Chatsworth. She preceded him in death on March 11, 1999. Mr. Ludwigs was employed as a meat cutter, retiring in 1982. He was mayor of Chatsworth for more than 25 years.

He was a member of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church in Chatsworth, where he was very active in all church activities. Mr. Ludwigs was presently a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Akron after St. Matthew and Trinity joined together. He was very active at Trinity, serving on the church council. In his free time, he loved ceramics and wood working.

Survivors include two sons, James Ludwigs and his wife, Laurie, and Jay Ludwigs and his wife, Cheryl, all of Omaha; two stepsons, Jeff Robinson and his special friend, Donna Windel of Chatsworth, and Kenny Johnson and his wife, Jill of Colorado; a daughter, Judy Smith of Sioux City; a stepdaughter, Margo Hodgins and her husband, Paul of Sioux City; three sisters, Amanda Bultman of Le Mars, Iowa, Minnie Huebner of Akron, and Gertrude Fluck of Minnesota; 14 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.
