LE MARS, Iowa -- Alvin H. Ludwigs, 82, of Le Mars died Thursday, Sept. 9, 2004, at Plymouth Manor Care Center in Le Mars.

Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Le Mars with the Rev. Gary Landsness officiating. Burial will follow at Christ Lutheran Cemetery, Grant Township, in rural Le Mars. Visitation begins at 2 p.m. today at Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 6:30 p.m. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church prior to services.

Alvin H. Ludwigs was born Dec. 24, 1921, on the family farm in Grant Township, Plymouth County, Iowa, the son of John and Mary (Renken) Ludwigs. He was raised on the farm and attended country school near his home. He continued to farm on the home place until 1971 when he moved to Le Mars with his mother and sister. In Le Mars he worked as a carpenter with Clarence Brunken until 1979. Alvin moved to Plymouth Manor Care Center on July 16, 2004.

He was a lifelong resident of Plymouth County. He was baptized and confirmed at Christ Lutheran Church, rural Le Mars and served on the church council. He later became a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Le Mars. Alvin loved to farm and will be remembered as a neat and efficient manager. In town he liked to work with wood, garden and can fruits and vegetables.

Survivors include a sister-in-law, Lillian (Mrs. Harry) Ludwigs of Le Mars; a nephew and his wife, David and Ramona Ludwigs of Le Mars; two nieces and their husbands, Patricia Ann and Robert Plueger and Anita Ann and David Meyers, all of Le Mars; and many great-nieces and great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Harry J. Ludwigs; and a sister, Adele Ludwigs.

Honorary pallbearers will be Leonard Kruse, Louis Westhoff, Arlan Heeren and Earl Frieden.

Pallbearers will be Nicholas Meyers, Ryan Meyers, Robbie Trometer, Joe Grasz, Marty Plueger and Jeremy Sjovall.
