Alfert O. Ludwigs Sr.

LE MARS, Iowa -- Alfert Otto Ludwigs Sr., 76, of Leesville, La., formerly of the Le Mars and Craig, Iowa, area, died Sunday, May 25, 2003, at Saint Francis Cabrini Hospital in Alexandria, La.

Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Labby Memorial Funeral Home Chapel in Leesville, with the Rev. Jerry Archibold officiating. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Leesville. Visitation will be 3 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Visitation will resume 8 a.m. until service time Wednesday at the funeral home.

Alfert was born April 30, 1927, in Craig, the son of D. Ludwigs and Tina (Hartmann) Ludwigs. He was baptized and confirmed at Christ Lutheran Church in rural Grant Township. He attended Craig Country School until the eighth grade. He then farmed and worked at a car dealership in Le Mars before enlisting in the U.S. Army in 1951. Upon separation from active duty in 1953, he continued to serve in the U.S. Army Reserves for 34 years, achieving the rank of chief warrant officer IV. Among the medals awarded for his military service were the Legion of Merit.

He worked in Federal Civil Service for 26 years, the last 15 years at Fort Polk, La.

He was a member of American Legion Post 387.

Survivors include his wife, Sharon Dianne (Holt) Ludwigs of Leesville; three sons, Alfert Ludwigs Jr. and his wife, Sheila of Plano, Texas, John Ludwigs and his fiancee, Sheri of Forney, Texas, and James Ludwigs of Leesville; six daughters and their husbands, Christy and Vince Tomlinson of Huxley, Iowa, Joy and Vince Martin of Anacoco, La., Linda and Todd Pry of Le Mars, Iowa, Sharon and Steve Grant of Escondido, Calif., Faith and Kevin Schlitz of Remsen, Iowa, and Amy and Kevin Schmidt of Cushing, Iowa; four stepchildren, Stephen Mann of Leesville, Stephenie Madrigal of Phoenix, Ariz., Becky and her husband, Richard Madrigal of Morrow, La., and Tammie and her husband, Dan Baker of Leesville; two sisters, Minnie Renken and Annie Hennings, both of Le Mars; 17 grandchildren; and eight stepgrandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Grace Donna Ludwigs; and a brother, Norman Ludwigs.
