HAWARDEN, Iowa -- Karl E. Jans, 84, of Hawarden died Friday, Sept. 28, 2001, at Hillcrest Health Care Center in Hawarden.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Westfield Congregational Church in Westfield, with the Rev. Steve Jewett officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery in Akron, Iowa. Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. today, with family present 5 to 7 p.m., at Schroeder Funeral Home in Akron.
Mr. Jans was born March 16, 1917, in Spink, S.D., the son of Charles and Freda (Mann) Jans. He married Cora Ross on Nov. 11, 1944, in Sioux City. He was employed as an automotive mechanic with Gassman Ford and Rod's Ford. He was also employed as a custodian and bus driver for the Akron-Westfield School District. He moved to Hawarden in 1993 to enjoy his retirement.
He served in the U.S. Army as a sergeant from Oct. 27, 1941, to Oct. 8, 1945.
He attended Westfield Congregational Church. In his free time, he enjoyed fishing, riding horses and camping.
Survivors include his wife; a daughter and her husband, Janice and Bill Gifford of Sioux City; two sons, Jerry of Akron, and Jason and his wife, Sharon of Hawarden; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and 10 sisters, Rose, Margaret, Lena, Minnie, Clara, Freda, Ethel, Edna, Marie and Golda.
Pallbearers will be Arvin Rosenbaum, Ernest Petty, Lee and Tom Ross, Kenneth Johnson and Don Dion.
