LE MARS, Iowa -- Gerhard A. "Gert" Jacobs, 99, of Le Mars died Sunday, Oct. 26, 2003, at Brentwood Good Samaritan Center in Le Mars.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Preston Township, rural Akron, Iowa, with the Rev. William Kallestad officiating. Burial will be in St. John's Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. today, with the family present after 6 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars.
Gerhard August Jacobs was born May 19, 1904, on the family farm in Preston Township, Plymouth County, Iowa, to John and Emilie (Becker) Jacobs. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church. He attended country school in Preston Township.
He was united in marriage to Dena Wilken on Oct. 9, 1930, at St. John's Lutheran Church. The couple farmed for many years and moved to Le Mars in 1964. He worked part time for the Le Mars Hatchery for nearly 20 years.
He had been an active member of St. John's Lutheran Church his entire life. He was a longtime member of the Lutheran Brotherhood and served his church in several positions throughout the years. He enjoyed fishing, playing cards and bowling in his younger years. The couple enjoyed traveling during their retirement years.
Survivors include two sons and their wives, Orlan and Karen Jacobs of Le Mars, and Stanley and LeJoyce Jacobs of Le Mars; a daughter and her husband, Margaret and David Sitzmann of Le Mars; 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; a great-great-granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Dena on Jan. 29, 1998; two sisters, Margaret Molzen and Hannah Borchers; a brother, Fred Jacobs; and a granddaughter, Mary Angela Jacobs.
Pallbearers will be Shane Jacobs, Kelly Jacobs, Jamie Jacobs, Scott Jacobs, Kevin Jacobs and Zachary Jacobs.
