MERRILL, Iowa -- Marie K. Epling, 81, of Merrill died Friday, May 9, 2003, at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars, Iowa.

Services will be 10 a.m Monday at Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars, with the Rev. Dr. Klaus Raab of St. John Lutheran Church in Merrill officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery, Merrill. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the funeral home.

Marie Kathryn Dirks was born Sept. 30, 1921, in Sioux County, Iowa, near Ireton, Iowa, to William H. and Hannah (Pageler) Dirks. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. She attended country school near Ireton.

She was untied in marriage to Kenneth Epling on April 23, 1946, in Merrill. The couple made their home in Merrill. As a longtime member of the Merrill community, she treasured her friendships with her many neighbors. In March 1998, she made her at Brentwood Good Samaritan Center in Le Mars.

She enjoyed gardening and raising flowers. She also enjoyed the time spent sewing and needlework projects.

Survivors include two sons, Jerel of Merrill and Joel and his wife, Bonnie of Le Mars; a grandson, Neil of Le Mars; six sisters-in-law, Evelyn Dirks of Le Mars, Fern Dirks of Le Mars, Dorothy Dirks of Hawarden, Iowa, Marie DeBoom of Le Mars, Marion and her husband, John Blackmore, of Merrill and Iva Mongue of St. Louis, Mo.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Hannah Dirks; her husband, Kenneth in September 1989; and five brothers, LeRoy, Henry, Albert, Roy and Leonard.

Pallbearers will be Neil Epling, Darwin Dirks, Dennis Dirks, Dwight Dirks, Myron Dirks and Terry Blackmore.
