MERRILL, Iowa -- Terry Allen Bertrand, 55, of Merrill passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, May 3, 2005, at the family farm.

Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel in Sioux City, with Elder Ronnie Thompson Jr. of Belmont Park Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in Lincoln, Neb., officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery, Merrill. Visitation with the family present will be 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Terry "Red" was born June 24, 1949, in Sioux City, the son of Francis J. "Buck" and Eleanore M. (Thompson) Bertrand.

He married Victoria L. Prodehl on June 24, 1967, in Sioux City. He later married Donna J. (Gaffey) Lathrop in 1985, in Hinton, Iowa.

He was a switchman for the Chicago Northwestern Railroad for 20 years. He later owned and operated the Merrill Locker for several years. More recently, he was a cattle and crop farmer.

He loved to help his family and friends whenever he could. He enjoyed visiting with people and was generous. He liked to talk to kids and often had suckers to hand out. He loved all of his children dearly and especially loved to cheer on his youngest son at wrestling. He had a special interest in his cattle "the girls" and even named a few. He took pride in custom baling and farming his ground. In addition, he enjoyed going to farm sales with his brothers, fishing, horseshoes, mushroom hunting and always a good game of euchre.

Survivors include his mother, Eleanore Bertrand of Sioux City; four children, Daniel F. Bertrand and his wife, Christine of Spokane, Wash., Thomas F. Bertrand and his wife, Kari of Sioux City, Jennifer L. and her husband, Chad Harsma of Hinton, Iowa, and Joel A. Bertrand of Merrill; four brothers, Robert "Bob" Bertrand and his wife, LuAnn, David Bertrand and his wife, Kathy, Tim Bertrand and Michael Bertrand, all of Sioux City; seven grandchildren, Matthew, Tammy, Alyssa, Sonja, Eric and Leah Bertrand and Jackson Harsma; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Pallbearers will be Daniel Bertrand, Thomas Bertrand, Joel Bertrand, Fred Brown, Jack Lukowicz and Robbie Trometer.
