Lois D. Besch, 83, of Sioux City died Friday, March 22, 2002, at Hearthstone Nursing Facility in Mesa, Ariz., following a brief illness.

Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Sioux City, with the Rev. Gary Snyder officiating. Entombment will be in the Mausoleum at Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., a parish vigil service at 7 p.m. and a rosary at 7:30 p.m., all at Larkin Northside Funeral Home.

Mrs. Besch was born Dec. 18, 1918, in rural Merrill, Iowa, the daughter of William and Frances (Prosdek) Bauerly. She was raised in the Merrill area and graduated from Liberty Township High School in 1937.

On Sept. 16, 1939, she married Herman Besch at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Ellendale, Iowa. The couple moved to Sioux City following their marriage. She was a homemaker and later traveled with her husband while he worked on the railroad. After his retirement, the couple would spend the winters in Mesa, which they had done since 1980.

She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and the church guild. She loved doing all kinds of arts and crafts. She will be most remembered for being a loving wife and mother.

Survivors include her husband of Sioux City; two daughters, Theresa and her husband, Herbert Payne of Sioux City, and Rita Davidson of Sioux City; seven grandchildren, Angelina Baker, Anna Oleson, Mary Polly, Christine Petersen, Herman "Joe" Hieb, Melissa Schoenewe and William Hieb; 19 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Allison Bauerly; and two sisters, Marie Boden and Wilma Brown.

Pallbearers will be John Ham, Douglas Harris, Joe Hieb, Jeremy Oleson, Gail Bauerly and William Baker. Honorary pallbearers will be her grandchildren, Angelina Baker, Anna Oleson, Mary Polly, Christine Petersen, William Hieb and Melissa Schoenewe.
