REMSEN, Iowa -- Rich Schiltz, 79, of Remsen died Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2001, at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars, Iowa.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Remsen, with the Rev. Thomas J. Hart officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Sunday, with a parish rosary at 3 p.m. and a vigil prayer service at 7:30 p.m., at Fisch Funeral Home in Remsen.
Mr. Schiltz was born April 19, 1922, in rural Remsen, the son of Anton and Elizabeth (Diekmann) Schiltz. He was raised and educated in the Remsen area. He was then engaged in farming with his father near Remsen. He served in the U.S. Army from Aug. 21, 1944 until his discharge on Nov. 15, 1945. He served one year in Germany during World War II, where he was wounded and received the Purple Heart Medal.
He married June Boever on Nov. 18, 1946, in Remsen. They made their home near Remsen, where they engaged in farming. He worked for Schaaf's Hardware in Remsen from February 1973 until their closing in August 1985. He then worked for Farmers Co-Op in Remsen, where he was currently employed. Rich and June moved into Remsen on Nov. 18, 1973.
He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3328.
Survivors include his wife, June, of Remsen; six sons, Gary and his wife, Mona, of Craig, Iowa, Steve and his wife, Pam, and Eugene, all of Remsen, Jim and his wife, Diana "Sam," of Casa Grande, Ariz., Bill and his wife, Karna, of Hinton, Iowa, and Doug and his wife, Pam, of Des Moines; two daughters and their husbands, Karen and Bob Fiedler and Mary and Randy Stoos, all of Remsen; 25 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Emily Mae Ahlers of Laurens, Iowa, and Mary Ann Hansen of Remsen; and a brother and his wife, Don and Pat of Remsen.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Elmer; and two sisters, Sally Delperdang and Irene Barthole.
Pallbearers will be Chad Fiedler, Chris Marks, Brian, Matt and Robert Schiltz and Laurie Stoos.
