HAZEL NEWMAN
HAWARDEN, Iowa – Hazel Newman, 88, of Hawarden died Thursday, May 10, 2001, at Hillcrest Health Care Center in Hawarden.
Services will be 1:30 p.m. Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawarden, with the Rev. Loren Vogler officiating. Burial will be in St. John’s Cemetery, Craig, Iowa. Visitation will be Sunday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden.
Mrs. Newman was born April 15, 1913, near Craig, the daughter of William L. and Anna (Westergaard) Van Buskirk. She attended rural grade school and graduated from LeMars (Iowa) High School. She taught rural school before and after her marriage.
She was employed with Otis Radio in Hawarden for 23 years, retiring due to poor health. She entered Hillcrest Health Care Center in 1990.
She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and enjoyed knitting, crocheting and embroidery.
Survivors include a son and his wife, Keith and Karen of Sioux City; a daughter and her husband, Neva and Robert Bean of Salix, Iowa; a son-in-law, Duane Witt of Hawarden; a sister, Shirley Bockelman of Hawarden; two brothers and their wives, Roland and Florence VanBuskirk of Aurora, Ill., and Lloyd and Carol VanBuskirk, of Sioux City; a brother-in-law, Keith Mitchell of Hawarden; a sister-in-law, Lauretta VanBuskirk of LeMars, Iowa; eight grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Jessee, Frankie and William; two sisters, Charlotte Mitchell and Helen Francis; two daughters, Betty Witt and Elizabeth Haddican; a son-in-law, Myron Haddican; a brother-in-law, Webb Francis; and four grandchildren, Dennis and Mark Witt, Cindy (Witt) Pick and Michael Newman.
