Hilda Jans
Hilda “Todd” Jans, 96, of LeMars, died Tuesday, April 8, 2003, at Floyd Valley Hospital, in Le Mars.
Hilda Iola Manz was born June 26, 1906, near Merrill, the daughter of William and Meta (Ehrck) Manz. She attended Merrill high school and graduated from Le Mars high school in 1924 with a teacher's certificate. Todd taught in rural schools in Plymouth county for many years. On June 12, 1940, Todd and Leslie Jans were united in marriage at the Methodist parsonage in Paullina. They made their home on a farm near Merrill and later near LeMars. Leslie died in 1971. Todd moved to Le Mars in 1974. She later made her home at the Brentwood Good Samaritan Center.
Todd was a member of the first united Methodist Church in Merrill and the WSCS. She was a 50 year member of the Vesper/LeMars Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star and the Past Matrons Club. She had been active with the Farm Bureau women, Sunshine Club, and the Merrill Study Club, where she served as county chairman of GFWC. Todd also enjoyed playing cards with her Friday afternoon club.
Survivors include her daughter, Carol Weidauer and her husband, Tim, of LeMars; three grandchildren, Jeff and his wife, Treasa, of LeMars, Greg and his wife, Elizabeth, of Starbuck, Minn., and Nicole Spencer and her husband, Matt, of LeMars; and four great-grandchildren Samantha, David, Tammy and Colin Weidauer.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband and Leslie in 1971; a son Stephen in 1981; sisters, Edna Kehrberg in 1992, and Pearl Manz in 2000.
Funeral services will be at United Methodist Church in Merrill. The Rev. Charles Tefft will officiate. Burial will follow at Hillside Cemetery in Merrill.
