Funeral Thursday for lifelong residentEthel Rowe, 83, LeMars, a Plymouth County native and lifelong resident, died unexpectedly of an apparent heart attack at her home Monday (March 20, 1989.)
Funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Plymouth Presbyterian Church, rural Akron. Rev. Hatty Duncan will officiate and burial will be in the church cemetery under direction of the Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home.
Visitation at the funeral home will be after 2 p.m. Wednesday with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m.
The former Ethel Gabel, she was born Feb. 1, 1906, in Johnson Township, Plymouth County, to Frank and Mary Taylor Gabel. She earned her 12th grade high school diploma and taught rural schools until her marriage.
Her marriage to Harlan Rowe took place Dec. 31, 1924, in LeMars. The couple farmed near LeMars. Mr. Rowe died in 1975.
Mrs. Rowe was a member of Plymouth Presbyterian Church, the Presbyterian Women’s Society, and was a Sunday school instructor for many years. She served as church organist for many years. She received the award for outstanding Presbyterian from Prospect Hill Presbytery.
She was a member of the Farm Bureau Women and was on the state board for FB women. She was chair person of the Plymouth County Cancer Society. She also received the Siouxland Marc Cox Conservation award and the Service to Agriculture Award for Plymouth County in 1988.
Survivors are a son, Dean Rowe, LeMars; a daughter, Mrs. William (Shirley) Timmins of LeMars; three grandchildren, Mrs. Todd (Sharon) Hendricksen of Omaha, Steve Rowe of LeMars and Mrs. Mark (Rebecca) Chapman of Apple Valley, Minn.; a brother, Ralph Gabel of LeMars; four sisters, Mrs. Cleo Tindall and Mrs. Kenneth (Eva) Brown, both of LeMars, Mrs. Opal Coates of Spokane, Wash., and Mrs.Charles (Frances) Bell, of Prescott, Ariz.
She was also preceded in death by her parents.
