Evelyn J. Gabel 86, of Le Mars, died Sunday, July 17, 2005, at Plymouth Manor Care Center in Le Mars.

Evelyn Jeanette Gabel was born June 20, 1919, at rural Le Mars, the daughter of Milton and Lena (Harbst) Gabel. She grew up in the Le Mars area, graduating from Le Mars High School in 1936. Following high school, she attended Western Union College for two years and then taught school in Iowa for several years at various locations. She received her B.A. from the University of Colorado and her M.A. from Highlands University in Las Vegas, N.M.

Evelyn taught school in Colorado and New Mexico, including mission schools in Velarde and Santa Cruz. She moved to Santa Rosa in 1971 where she taught remedial reading until she retired in 1981. After her retirement, Evelyn moved to Alcester, S.D., in June of 2000 and lived there until September of 2001 when she came to live in Le Mars. She became a resident of Plymouth Manor Care Center in January 2002.

Survivors include nieces and nephews, Cleone (Philips) Brown, Marjorie (Herman) and Virgil Willer, Eva (Herman) Varenhorst, Robert and Betty Philips, Gerald Herman, Lennace (Philips) and Carlyle Brandt, Willard and Estella Herman, Delores (Herman) and Donald Bohlken, Joanne (Stoel) and Kervyn Heeren, Duane and Nancy Herman, Evonne (Stoel) DeVinney, Margery (Burkett) Barnhill, Shirley (Herman) and Verlyn Baker, Linda (Burkett) and Gerald Smith, Gladys (Herman) Mroczkowski, Milford and Sharon Herman, Donald and Gloria Herman, Terry and Karen Burkett, Debra (Knowles) and John Robine, and many great, great-great and great-great-great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, seven sisters, Mabel Herman, Martha Philips, Lillian Gabel, Edith Burkett, Alice Willer, Mildred Stoel and Leone Knowles, and six nephews and two nieces.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Adaville United Methodist Church, rural Merrill, with the Rev. Ben Meeks officiating. Burial will be at Memorial Cemetery in Le Mars. Visitation begins after 5 p.m. today (Monday), with family present from 5 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m. at the Mauer - Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars, Iowa.
