Helen A. Schulz, 76, of Le Mars died Friday, July 23, 2004, at Plymouth Manor Care Center in Le Mars.

Helen Annie Albert was born March 27, 1928, to Clarence E. and Grace (Nanninga) Albert on the family farm in Elgin Township, Plymouth County, Iowa. She was baptized at the Hildreth Memorial Evangelical Church, Le Mars, and confirmed at the Seney United Methodist Church. Helen attended rural school at Elgin Township #4 and graduated from Le Mars High School in 1946. Prior to her marriage, Helen was a country schoolteacher and had taught at Grant Township #2 and Seney. Helen was united in marriage to Herman O. Schulz on March 28, 1950, at the Seney Methodist Church. Helen and Herman farmed in Elgin Township for 40 years until their retirement in 1989 when they moved to Le Mars.

Helen had been an active member of her church, having taught Sunday school for 30 years and had served as the church pianist and organist at Seney Methodist Church for 40 years. In 1988, Helen transferred her church membership to the First United Methodist Church in Le Mars, where she continued to remain an active worker in her church and a member of the United Methodist Women.

Also active in her community, Helen was a 4-H leader for 20 years, and served on the Plymouth County Cancer Board, Plymouth Manor Nursing Home Auxiliary, and Floyd Valley Hospital Auxiliary. Helen enjoyed doing crafts, gardening, and raising flowers. Her family and friends were so very important to her.

Helen is survived by her husband of 54 years, Herman of Le Mars; two children, Albert of Le Mars and Ann of Le Mars; two grandchildren, Patrick of Iowa City and Shallynn of Le Mars; a great-grandson, Jaydon of Le Mars; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Harold and M. Janice Albert of Le Mars and Earl and Janice E. Albert of Le Mars; a step-sister and her husband, Ferne and Charles Obye of Sun City, Ariz.; a step-brother, Donald Dunn of Peoria, Ariz.; and many nieces and nephews.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence Albert and Grace Albert Dunn; a stepfather, Le Roy Albert and stepfather, George Dunn.

Funeral services were at 10:30 a.m. today (Monday) at the Presbyterian United Church of Christ in Le Mars with the Rev. Jason Larson of the First United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Cemetery, Le Mars. Visitation was after 3 p.m. Sunday at the Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars followed by a 7 p.m. prayer service Sunday evening at the funeral home.

Pallbearers were Dan Albert, Steve Albert, Ed Rolfes, Dave Heeren, Tom Britt, and Stan Krider.
