Tuesday, July 20, 2004Jean M. Hawkins, 85, of Le Mars died Sunday, July 18, 2004, at the Plymouth Manor Care Center in Le Mars.
Jean Marjorie VandenBerge was born June 13, 1919, in Le Mars, the daughter of Peter and Jennie (Rietveld) VandenBerge. Jean was raised on the family farm near Carnes, and attended country school near Carnes. As a young woman, Jean was hired by the Hawkins family to help care for "Grandma Jane" Hawkins. While caring for "Grandma Jane," Jean met her future husband, Richard Hawkins. Jean and Richard were united in marriage on Aug. 13, 1941, at the Carnes Reformed Church. They lived on the Hawkins farm northeast of Seney in Elgin Township until they moved to Le Mars in 1980. Richard continued to farm until August 2002.
Jean helped with the farm and caring for their children. Jean was a longtime member of the Seney United Methodist Church and a member of the U.M.W. She was also a member of the Christian Woman's Club. She enjoyed gardening and tending to her flowers. She will be remembered for the care given to her 40 African-violet plants. She had also enjoyed quilting and in her later years enjoyed reading.
Survivors include her husband of 62 years, Richard of Le Mars; four children, Rachael and Louis Westhoff of Le Mars, Marilyn and Jose Rendon of Greenriver, Wyo., and Malaga, Spain, Roger and Kathleen Hawkins of Le Mars, and Barbara and Gary Dantes of Orr, Minn.; 13 grandchildren, four stepgrandchildren, and 24 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Peter and June VandenBerge of Orange City, James and Judy VandenBerge of Traverse City, Mich.; two sisters, Ruth and Frank DeVries of Orange City and Darlene and Tom Kiernan of Savannah, Ga; a sister-in-law, Blanche Dennler of Merrill; a brother-in-law, David and Judy Hawkins of Orange City; and several nieces and nephews.
Jean was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Lloyd VandenBerge who was killed during World War II; and a granddaughter, Sarah Hawkins.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Seney United Methodist Church with the Rev. Mike Janes officiating. Interment will be in Resthaven Memory Gardens, rural Le Mars. Visitations will be after 3 p.m. Wednesday, at the Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars. The family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday to greet friends with a 7 p.m. prayer service Wednesday evening at the funeral home.
