Obituary:

Lula Schultz, 90, formerly of rural Le Mars, died Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2003, at Boise, Idaho.

Lula Schultz was born Nov. 6, 1913, the daughter of Claire and Katherine (Schram) Bradley. She was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church in Le Mars. Lula was raised in Le Mars and educated in the Le Mars public school system, graduating with a normal training diploma, which allowed her to immediately begin teaching. Lula started teaching rural school at age 18 and was oftentimes younger than some of her students. She taught country school south of Le Mars in the Stanton township area where she met the Schultz family.

On May 29, 1937, Lula and Carl L. Schultz were united in marriage at St. John's Lutheran Church in Le Mars. The couple made their first home on a farm south of Le Mars in Stanton Township, just a few miles south of the Schultz home place, where six of their seven children were born. Carl Jr. was born in Minnesota when the family lived on a farm near Swanville, Minn., across the road from Carl's brother, Ivan and his family. They moved back to Iowa in 1956 and lived in Struble where Lula taught grades 4-8 in the two-room country school. In 1958, they bought the Nicholson farm west of Struble. Lula later taught fourth grade at the Maurice-Orange City School District until her retirement at age 62. While teaching school and raising seven children, Lula earned a college degree, graduating from Westmar College in 1967.

Following the death of her husband, Carl in 1995, Lula moved to Boise, Idaho, to be closer to her children.

She enjoyed reading, music, crafts, and gardening. She loved flowers and plants.

She will be lovingly remembered by her children, Darrell Schultz and wife, Jane, of Pocatello, Idaho, Richard Schultz of Boise, Idaho, Randy Schultz and wife, Debbie, of Waconia, Minn., and Carl Schultz of Boise, Idaho, Judy Wetzel of Las Vegas, Nev., and Bonnie Ruenholl and husband David of Syracuse, Neb.; 10 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; her in-laws Ray Barthole of Deer Park, Washington, Harry and Sylvia Schultz of Merrill, and Ivan and Blanche Schultz of Swanville, Minn.; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Carl; a son, David, in 1993; a brother, William Bradley; four sisters, Helen Plendl, Ruth Barthole, Dorothy Naryka and Irene Ross; a sister-in-law, Alva Kehrberg; and four brothers-in-law Ed Kehrberg, Bud Plendl, Adam Naryka and Elmer "Bud" Ross.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at St. John's Lutheran Church E.L.C.A. in Le Mars, with the Rev. Gary Landsness officiating. Burial will follow at the Stanton Township Cemetery, rural Le Mars. Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. on Saturday at the church. The Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home of Le Mars is in charge of arrangements.

Pallbearers will be her six grandsons, Jeffry Wetzel, Richard Brokaw, Michael Brokaw, Clinton Schultz, Ryan Schultz, and Erik Schultz.

Honorary pallbearers will be her four granddaughters, Katrina Nelson, Sara O'Connor, Nickole Brokaw and Korine Schultz.
