Vera M. Roberson, 88, of Le Mars, died Sunday, Dec. 28, 2003, at The Abbey of Le Mars.

Vera Mae Roberson was born Feb. 13, 1915, in Marcus, the daughter of Lloyd W. and Neva Grace (Wilson) Barnes. She was raised on a farm near Marcus and graduated from Marcus High School. Vera continued her education in Cedar Falls, where she received her normal training certificate from the University of Northern Iowa. She returned to the Marcus area to teach in rural schools.

In 1935, Vera and Edward Dale Rasmus were united in marriage in Marcus. The couple moved to Excelsior Springs, Mo., where they owned and operated a restaurant. The couple later returned to the area where they operated a restaurant and later a gas station in Cherokee.

Vera and James Roberson were married in 1953 in Minnesota. James died suddenly the following year. Vera and her family relocated to Storm Lake before moving to Le Mars in 1969. Vera purchased the Sweet 16 Bowling Lanes and operated the business with her daughter Kay and son-in-law, Virgil.

In 1987, Vera and Wallace Phillips were married in California. Wallace died in 1990. Vera had been a resident of The Abbey of Le Mars for the past month.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Le Mars. She was also a life member of the Order of the Eastern Star. Vera loved to visit with others, was an excellent letter writer and enjoyed reading. She was also an avid bowler who enjoyed the sport well into her 80s.

She will be lovingly remembered by her daughter, Kay Schramm and her husband Virgil of Le Mars; a son Boyd Rasmus and his wife Andrea of Columbus, Neb.; a daughter, Harriet Buckalew and her husband, Bill, of Benicia, Calif.; grandchildren, Nadine Schramm of Middleburg, Fla., Gregory Schramm and his wife, Diana of Ada, Mich., Leisha Schramm and Alan Phillips of Le Mars, and David Rasmus, and his wife, Kathy, of Minneapolis, Minn.; three great-grandchildren Katlin, Kristen and Braydon Schramm, all of Ada, Mich.; and a sister Madge Drefke of Marcus.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands Edward Dale, James and Wallace; and a brother, Lee Barnes.

A Celebration of Life service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church in Le Mars. Pastor Jason Larson will officiate. The family will have a private burial service. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. Friday at the Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home of Le Mars. The family will be present beginning at 5 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church prior to the service.

Memorials may be directed to the First United Methodist Church in Le Mars.
