Ardie W. Herbst, 88, of Merrill, died Tuesday, Jan.13, 2004, at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City.

Ardie William Herbst was born Jan. 29, 1915, in Merrill, the son of Guss H. and Katie (Arbuck) Herbst. He was baptized at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Sioux City. He graduated from Hinton High School in 1933.

Ardie lived nearly his entire life on the family farm west of Merrill that was homesteaded by his grandfather in 1876. Along with his father and five brothers, he worked earnestly to increase their large farming operation. He was dedicated to raising livestock and an enthusiast for the latest agricultural technology. He loved farming and up until his health no longer allowed some four years ago, he could be seen driving his truck around to survey his farms.

Ardie will be lovingly remembered for his easy going optimistic nature, raising his famous black diamond watermelons, interest in all current events, and his great sense of humor.

He is survived by a sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy and Wayne Brown of Brunsville; three sisters-in-law, Catherine Rosenow and Mary Anne Herbst of Merrill and Dorothy Herbst of Sioux City; as well as numerous nephews, nieces, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Guss and Katie Herbst and three brothers, Arlo Norman, Benjamin Herman, and his twin brother, Odie Gust Herbst.

Visitations will be after 3 p.m. Friday at the Carlsen Funeral in Le Mars with the family present to greet friends after 6 p.m. followed by a 6:30 p.m. prayer service. Interment will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in Resthaven Memory Gardens Cemetery. The Rev. Larry Fett of Grace Lutheran Church will officiate.

Pallbearers will be Harlan, Marlin, Elwin, Melvin, and Norman Herbst. Honorary pallbearers will be Leon Herbst, Jim Brown, Mark Brown, Steve Herbst, Brian Herbst, and Mike Herbst.
