Herman C. "Junior" Freking, Jr., 72, a Le Mars native and lifelong resident, died Saturday, Jan. 17, 2004 at The Abbey in Le Mars, following a lengthy illness.
Junior was born July 17, 1931, in Le Mars, the son of Herman and Regina (Schroeder) Freking, Sr. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Joseph's Catholic Church and attended St. Joseph's Catholic School in Le Mars. He married Elizabeth "Betty" Rose Mary Busch on May 3, 1956, at Holy Name Catholic Church in Marcus. Junior farmed most of his life east of Le Mars, first with his father and later on the farm he and Betty purchased just north of his father's.
Junior was a lifelong member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus, Trinity Council #1466. He was also a member of the American Legion, Wasmer Post #241, Fraternal Order of Eagles, Aerie #1381, and a longtime member of local saddle clubs.
Junior will be lovingly remembered for his beaming, ever-present smile, good nature and joking manner. He was a friend to all he met.
He is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Betty and his 13 children: Mary Kay and her husband, Rick Juhl of Le Mars, Steven Freking and his wife, Micayla, of Whitewater, Kan., Diane and her husband, Rick Baack, of Le Mars, Linda and her husband, Don Bouma, of Le Mars, Randy Freking and his wife, Lisa, of Le Mars, Christy and her husband, Todd Siders, of Boise, Idaho, Dale Freking and his wife, Lisé, of Inver Grove Heights, Minn., Jeffrey Freking of Le Mars, Dean Freking and his wife, Julie, of Milton, Mass., Gerald Freking and his wife, Rebecca, of Le Mars, Charles Freking and his wife, Michelle, of Sergeant Bluff, Douglas Freking and his wife, Jennifer, of Des Moines, and Angela and her husband, Dennis Meister, of Tulsa, Okla. He is also survived by 38 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and five brothers and sisters: Ethel Mayer of Remsen; Lorraine Miller of Remsen; Harold Freking and his wife, Kay, of Le Mars, Karen McPherson and her husband, Rick, of Iowa City, and Lloyd Freking of Le Mars.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a daughter-in-law Mary (Schroeder) Freking.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Le Mars with the Rev. Andrew Hoffmann as celebrant. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Le Mars. His eight sons will be pallbearers.
Friends may call anytime after 2 p.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph's Church. There will be a rosary at 4 p.m., the Scriptural Wake Service at 7 p.m. and a Knights of Columbus rosary at 8 p.m., all at the church. Visitation will continue Wednesday morning at the church from 8 a.m. until service time. Feuerstein Funeral Home of Le Mars is in charge of arrangements.
