Elva Hawkins
Elva Lois Hawkins, 94, of LeMars, died Tuesday, July 23, 1996, at Plymouth Manor Care Center in LeMars.
Mrs. Hawkins, the former Elva King, was born April 7, 1902, in rural Plymouth County. She was the daughter of Warren and Birdean (Poyzer) King. She attended rural school and graduated from Merrill High School. She attended college in Aberdeen, S.D., and taught rural school. She married Harry S. Hawkins on March 1, 1922, at Adaville. They farmed for many years. He died Feb. 2, 1978. She had been a resident of Plymouth Manor since 1988.
She was a lifelong member of Adaville United Methodist Church and had taught Sunday school at the church for many years.
Survivors include four sons, Duane and his wife, Leola of Wakonda, S.D.; Royal and his wife, Dorothy, of Minneapolis, Minn.; Norris and his wife, Pat, of LeMars; and Lorvan and his wife, Phyllis, of Ireton; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; a brother, Stanley and his wife, Lois King of LeMars; and two sisters, E. Ferne Tindall of LeMars; and Freda Dreeszen of Akron.
She was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Harriet Hawkins; two grandsons, Joel and Timothy Hawkins; a brother in infancy; and a sister, Ione Roggow.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Adaville United Methodist Church. The Rev. Fred Malone will officiate, with burial at Resthaven Memory Gardens in (rural) LeMars. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. Thursday with a prayer service at 7 p.m. at the Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in LeMars.
