Gertrude L. Brown

LeMars, Iowa—Gertrude L. Brown, 91, of LeMars, and formerly of rural Merrill, died Monday, Dec. 17, 1990, at Plymouth Manor Care Center in LeMars.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Adaville United Methodist Church, rural Merrill, with the Rev. Shirley Textor officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Valley Cemetery, rural Merrill. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Thursday, with the family present from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in LeMars.

Mrs. Brown, the former Gertrude L. Morehead, was born Dec. 22, 1898, in Johnson Township, Plymouth County, the daughter of Wilbur and Ella (Fletcher) Morehead. A lifelong Plymouth County resident, she graduated from high school at Merrill and attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls for the summer session. She taught rural school in Plymouth County for three years. She married Elmer Brown Dec. 16, 1920, at Adaville. The couple farmed in the Adaville area for many years before their retirement. He died Dec. 9, 1987.

Mrs. Brown was a member of the Adaville United Methodist Church, where she was a longtime Sunday school teacher. She was also active in the Farm Bureau women’s activities.

Survivors include two sons, Kenneth Brown and his wife, Eva, of LeMars, and Merlin Brown and his wife, Cleone, of Merrill; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Lloyd Morehead, of Akron.

She was also preceded in death by two brothers and five sisters.
