Gordon Stokes

LeMars, Iowa—Gordon Stokes, 80, of LeMars, a former state representative, died Sunday at a Sioux City hospital after an illness of several months. [Date of death: 28 May 1978 per handwritten note on the scrapbook page]

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Presbyterian United Church of Christ. The Rev. James Ramson will officiate. Burial will be in Westhaven (sic Resthaven) Memory Gardens. Masonic services will be conducted at 8 p.m. today at the Mauer Funeral Home, LeMars.

Mr. Stokes was born Feb. 16, 1898, in Plymouth County and was a life-long county resident. He married Laura “Dolly” J. Bixby on Feb. 12, 1930, in Wentworth, S.D.

Mr. Stokes was a farmer and served in the state legislature from 1960 to 1972. He was a member of the Presbyterian United Church of Christ, past president of the Plymouth County Farm Bureau, a 60-year member of the LeMars Municipal Band, a member of Masonic Lodge 428 at LeMars, the Abu Bekr Shrine in Sioux City, the Order of Eastern Star at LeMars and the Rotary Club, and was on the board of directors of the First National Bank at LeMars at the time of his death.

Mr. Stokes also was a long-time director of the Oyens Cooperative Elevator.

Survives include the widow; a brother, Carlton of LeMars, and a sister, Miss Hazel Stokes, of Vermillion.
