George Steele, 70, Former Mayor, Dies

Funeral services were held Saturday at the First Presbyterian church for George Steele, 70, a retired farmer and former mayor of LeMars, who died Thursday, April 16, at Sacred Heart hospital.

The Rev. Allen Bowe conducted the services, and burial was at the city cemetery with Masonic rites. Mauer funeral home was in charge of arrangements.

George Robert Steele was born May 23, 1882 in Union township in this county, and with the exception of one year in California, lived in the county his entire life. He moved to LeMars in 1920.

In his later years, he occupied himself resurfacing floors. He was elected mayor of LeMars in 1941, and was re-elected two years later, serving in that capactiy until 1945.

His marriage to Minnie Kohl took place Feb. 21, 1906 in the Unin township home of the bride. She survives him, as do his daughter, Mrs. Kermit Watson, Omaha, Neb., two grandsons, one now in the service; two brothers, John Kansas City, Mo., and Frank, Malvern, Iowa; and three sisters, Mrs. Agnes Eyres, LeMars; Mrs. Roy Hall, Wagner, S. D., and Mrs. Margaret McArthur, Alberta, Canada.
