Elizabeth Greenen Goes To Reward

Pioneer Citizen of Plymouth County Was In Good Health

Mrs. Elizabeth Greenen, well known and respected resident of Le Mars since 1883, died this morning after a comparatively brief sickness with influenza. Mrs. Greenen had been in excellent health all summer, and despite her great age was able to be around and work among the flowers which she and her daughter raised in profusion.

The funeral will be held Saturday morning at 10 o’clock, from St. Joseph’s Catholic church.

Mrs. Greenen’s maiden name was Elizabeth Weber. She was born in Cosdorff, Luxembourg, November 1, 1843, and at the time of her death she was 84 years, 10 months and 19 days old. She came to the United States in 1865, and was married to J. B. Greenen, at Aurora, Ill., in 1871. Her husband proceeded her and death in 1914, and a daughter, Sr. M. Alverna, died in the Franciscan convent in Dubuque in 1904.

The following children survive: Mrs. Mary Greenen, who has lived at home with her mother; Sr. M. Servatius, principle of the Immaculate Conception academy at Dubuque, and the Misses Rose and Lena Greenen, who were teachers in Sioux City Central high school.

Mrs. Greenen was a lifelong Catholic, a member of the Christian Mothers society and of the St. Joseph’s church ever since she came to Le Mars. She was a devoted mother for whom no sacrifice was too great for the sake of her family. The universal esteem in which she was held is reflected in the sorrow of her friends and acquaintances.

With Her Husband Conducted Hotel In Early Days

Mrs. Greenen Passes Away

Mrs. J. B. Greenen, an old and respected resident of Le Mars, died at her home, 10 Third Street NE Thursday morning at an early hour following an illness of a week suffering from summer flu. She was nearly 85 years of age and had enjoyed good health all her life, and was remarkably spry and active for one of her years.

Elizabeth Webber was born at Consdorf, in the Grand Duchy, of Luxembourg, Europe, on November 1, 1843, where she was educated and grew to young womanhood. She came to America in 1865 and was married to J. B. Greenen at Aurora, Ill., in 1871. They came to the Mars in 1883 in for a number of years conducted the Eastern House hotel which was a popular stopping place with farmers in the pioneer days.

Mr. Greenen passed away in 1914.

Mrs. Greenen leaves to mourn her death four daughters, Sister M. Servatius, who is principal of the Immaculate Conception academy at Dubuque, Miss Lena and Miss Rose Greenen, who are teachers in Central high school, Sioux City, and Miss Mary Greenen, living at home. One daughter, Sister Alvernal, of St. Francis convent in Dubuque, preceded her in death, passing away in 1904.

Mrs. Greenen was a devout Christian woman, a loving mother and good neighbor. She was a member of St. Joseph church, and a member of the Christian Mothers society of that church.

Services will be held Saturday morning at 10 o’clock at St. Joseph’s church and the interment made in St. Joseph cemetery beside her husband.
