Was a Resident of Le Mars For the Past Forty-Six Years

Death claimed Mrs. Christian Bartels, a pioneer resident of Le Mars, at her home 414 Fourth Avenue SE, Wednesday evening, shortly after 7 o’clock, following an illness of many months caused by heart trouble.

Mrs. Bartels had been in failing health ever since the death of her husband three years ago, and during the past few months her strength rapidly waned.

Mrs. Bartels was a resident of Le Mars for forty-six years and was widely known and esteemed in the community.

Her maiden name was Anna Marie Speier and she was born in Galena, Ill., December 25, 1853. She grew to young womanhood in her native place and received her early education in the schools there.

With her father, Rudolph Speier, and two sisters, she came to Le Mars in April 1882, and this was her home the rest of her life. She was united in marriage with Christian Bartels, of Le Mars, on June 17, 1884, and they enjoyed a long and happy married life until his death August 26, 1925. Bartels, Aberdeen, South Dakota; Mrs. Orville Lee, Le Mars; Mrs. Louis Fenske, Glendive, Montana, and Miss Mildred Bartels, living at home. There are eight grandchildren. Mrs. bartels was one of the family of seven children. She leaves besides her children and grandchildren two sisters, Miss Bertha Speier and Miss Minna Speier, of Le Mars.

Mrs. Bartels what is a charter member of St. John’s Evangelical church, and a charter member of the aid society. She was active in church and community work and set a lasting example by uprightness and integrity in her daily life. She was a neighbor who gained gratitude opocially in the early days when medical treatment and efficient nursing were not so plentiful, by her ready response to attend the sick, help the needy, and console the bereaved and hastened readily to the call. She was a devoted wife and mother, self sacrificing for the interest of her children, took a healthy interest in the doings of the world and by her acts and conduct helped to make it a better place in which to live.

The funeral will be held from the residence at 2 o’clock, Saturday afternoon, and services will be held at St. John’s evangelical church at 2:30, Rev. P. V. Dyck officiating and the interment made in the city cemetery.
