Pioneer Business Man Dies Tuesday

Takes Chill Which Developed Into Pneumonia While at Work In Garden

While working in his garden at his home at 427 First Ave. S.E., on a warm day, William Remer overworked himself and suffered a chill, which developed into pneumonia and caused the death of one of Le Mars’ pioneer business men, early Tuesday morning. Deceased was suffering with a cold and asthma.

William Frederick Remer was born in Fond du Lac, Wis., on June 21, 1861, and came with is parents to Marion twp., Plymouth county when he was 14 years of age. In Marion township they took up farming and after several years on the farm deceased accepted a position as a traveling representative for the International Harvester Co. He remained with the company for several years and decided to enter the world of business for himself. He purchased the interest in the Kissell Coal Co., of this city, and from this business made good and today has one of the leading coal yards of the city.

Mr. Remer was married at a young age to Ida Gralapp and to this union four sons were born. In 1895 Mrs. Remer passed away, leaving her devoted husband and children to care for themselves. Six years later Mr. Remer was married to Lena Schuler, who with the children and many relatives and friends, mourn his loss.

The sons who survive are Earl Remer, employed at the Cooper Clothing Co., Le Mars; Rueben Remer, of Sioux City; Dr. Roy Remer, Spencer, and Dr. Wm. Remer of Ft. Dodge. The following brothers and sisters are also left to mourn his loss; Otto, Le Mars; Ed, Ponca City, Okla.; Fred, Le Mars; Charles, Green Valley, Wash.; Louis, Goodell, Ia.; Ben, Le Mars; and Harry of Audubon, Ia.; and Mrs. Albert Weisenberg, Greenly, Colo., and Mrs. Peter Hansen of Popejoy, Ia.

Mrs. Sophie Remer of this city, his aged mother and his beloved wife also survive.

The funeral was held this afternoon at 2:30 o’clock from St. Paul’s M. E. Church and burial was made in the city cemetery. Beely’s had charge of the funeral.

Deceased was a good member of St. Paul’s M. E. Church and was active in the I. O. O. F., Masons and Modern Woodmen lodges. He was a good husband and father and enjoyed the acquaintance of many friends throughout the county.
