Robert Wurth Rites Held Here Monday

Funeral services for Robert Wurth, popular 20-year-old Remsen boy who was killed in a motor car accident last Thursday morning, were held in St. Mary's Catholic church Monday. The pastor, the Rt. Rev. Msgr Francis Schultes sang the requiem high mass.

Wake was held Saturday and Sunday with rosary recital each evening at 8 o'clock in the Fisch funeral home which was in charge of arrangements.

Robert lost his life when the car in which he was riding with his neighborhood friend Gene Poeckes, Jr. went into a ditch two miles from Ocheyedan, Iowa, about 10 o'clock Thursday morning, the boys were on their way to the lakes for some ice fishing. The car hit an icy spot on he highway, slid into the ditch and both doors went open. Robert in some unexplainable way was hit by the car, suffering a spinal fracture and crushed chest. His companion, driver of the car, was not injured beyond bruises.

Robert was born on a farm one mile west of Remsen February 24, 1937, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Bernie Wurth. He attended St. Mary's school and was a graduate in 1956. The young man was one of the school's most popular, a good student of all-around splendid character and thus endeared himself to the student body, his teachers and his many friends over the area. His tragic death came as a shock to all, and hundreds poured into the funeral home and attended the final services and burial rites in St. Mary's cemetery.

The young man for four years was a member of Co. K. Iowa National Guard, LeMars, and under its auspices attended a leadership school for four months in 1956-57 at Fort Benning, Ga. On his return he resumed assisting his father on the farm two miles north of Remsen.

Military honors were given by Co. K. at the burial service.

Pallbearers were Gene Poeckes, Jr., Robert Knelp, Kenneth Knelp, Mark Schroeder, Lawrence Freking and William Evans.
