Old Pioneer Dies

Julius Klatt, aged 84, passed away Sunday afternoon at the Panska Nursing home in Hawarden where he has been living since he left Merril last spring. He had been in failing health for the past several years.

He was a resident of Merrill for many years after retiring from his farm near Adaville. He came to Merrill in 1911. For years Mr. Klatt was Merrill's town marshall and standby. He was active in community affairs until his health began to fail.

He is survived by two daughters, Lydia of Parker, S. D., and Lottie of San Francisco, Calif.; also his cousins, the Pausch family of Merrill.

He was preceded by two sons Charles and Eddie.
He was married to Lizzie Pritchard and later divorced.

Remains were broughtto Mauer Funeral home at Le Mars. Funeral services were Monday at 1:30 at the Mauer funeral chapel. Burial was at the Adaville cemetery under the direction of Mauer funeral home.

Julius Klatt, Merrill Died Sunday, Funeral Services Tuesday

Julius Klatt, Merrill Died Sunday, Jan. 20, at the Panska nursing home in Hawarden. Mr. Klatt had been in the nursing home the past ten months.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Jan 22, at 1:30 p.m. at the Mauer Funeral chapel in Le Mars. Burial will be in the Pleasant Valley cemetery in Adaville.

Julius Klatt was born July 15, 1864 in Germany. After coming to the United States, he settled on a farm in the Adaville vicinity. He retired in 1911 and moved to Merrill. He married Lizzie Prichard and was later divorced.

He is survived by a son, Charles and a daughter Ida both living in South Dakota

JULIUS KLATT WAS LAST LAMP LIGHTER IN MERRILL

Mrs. Ida Pausch recieved word Sunday of the death of her cousin, Julius Klatt, 87, a patient in the Panska home in Hawarden.

Mr. Klatt was a marshall in Merrill for many years and had the distinction of being the last street lamp lighter, hauling his fuel for thelamps in a small hand pulled wagon.

This was before the advent of electricity in town about 1913, when a municipal plant was installed.

The funeral which was to be held Tuesday, had to be postponed because of the storm.

Funeral Postponed

The funeral of Julius Klatt was postponed until Thursday owing to impossible roads and weather.

We are adding a bit of additional information to our last week's notice concerning the early life of this old pioneer which we know his many Merrill friends appreciate.

Julius Klatt was born in Baldenburg W. Germany on July 15, 1865. He came to Chicago with his parents when he was five years of age where they resided for several years then moving to Shellsburg, Wis. In 1880 they moved to Liberty Twp. Plymouth County where Julius lved until about 1912, when he moved to Merrill which was his hme until about a years ago when failing health necessiated his removal to the Panska Nursing home at Hawarden.

The services were conducted by rev. J. G. Breckman of the St John's Lutheran church at the Mauer Funeral home Le Mars. Burial was in the Adaville cemetery. The pallbearers were; Will Karli, Albert Lang, Elmer Braune, Frank Jebsen, Will Trometer and Tom Bogner.

Funeral Wednesday For Julius Klatt

Pallbearers for the Julius Klatt funeral which was held last Wednesday were Elmer Braune, Frank Jebson, Albert Lang, Tom Bogner, Wm. Trometer and Wm. Carley.

Rev. J. G. Brinkmann conducted the services and interment was in the Adaville cemetery.

Surviving are two daughters Mrs. H. R. Sullivan (Lydi) of Louisiana and Mrs. Wm. Burkshire (Lydia) of Provo, S. D. One son Charles whereabouts unknown.
