Ronald "Ron" Duane Schroeder

March 05, 1939 - September 24, 2018

Ronald ‘Ron’ Schroeder, 79, of Akron, Iowa, passed away Monday, September 24, 2018 at his home in Akron surrounded by his family.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 29, 2018 at Trinity Lutheran Church, E.L.C.A. in Akron. Pastor Susan Juilfs will officiate. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery in Akron. Visitation with the family present will be after 4:00 p.m. on Friday, September 28, 2018 at Trinity Lutheran Church. There will be a Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m. at the church. Visitation will resume from 10:00 a.m. until service time on Saturday at the church. Arrangements are with the Rexwinkel-Schroeder Funeral Home in Akron.

In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to the Birdie and Carol Harris School of Performing Arts and/or the City of Akron Swimming Pool Building Fund.

Ronald Duane Schroeder was born west of Le Mars, Iowa on March 5, 1939, the son of Herbert and Lillian (Koch) Schroeder. He lived in St. Mary’s, Nebraska until 3rd grade, when his family moved near Ocheyedan, Iowa. He graduated from Ocheyedan High School in 1956. He attended Westmar College in Le Mars for 4 years.

He was united in marriage to Karen Glade on May 31, 1959 in Ocheyedan, Iowa

Ron continued college for 2 more years at the University of Minnesota where he received his degree in Mortuary Science. Ron completed his internship at a funeral home in Iowa City, Iowa.

In 1964, Ron and Karen moved to Akron, Iowa. They owned and operated Schroeder Funeral Home for over 40 years. Ron also ran the ambulance service in Akron for many years.

Ron was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church for 54 years. He served on the Akron School Board and the Excellence Scholarship committee. His community commitments were the Akron Chamber of Commerce, Akron Lion’s Club, and the Akron Development Corporation. His favorite accomplishments included the building of the new school, Trinity Lutheran Church, and the Akron Golf Course. He was a member of the Iowa Funeral Director’s Association for many years.

Ron was so very proud of his community and appreciated all the families he was able to help. He was so thankful for many great friendships and his morning coffee group, “Old Geyser’s Club”. Ron will be remembered for his sense of humor and the love he had for his family and all the people that he met. He and Karen loved attending all their kids and grandchildren’s activities.

Survivors include his wife of over 59 years, Karen of Akron; his children: Beth (Steven) Rust of Lake Andes, SD, Rhonda (Lynn) Johnson of Akron, IA, Bob (Stacey) Schroeder of Lee’s Summit, MO, and Tom (Jill) Schroeder of Akron, IA; 17 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; two sisters: Lois (Ronald) Doran of Spencer, IA, and Donna Boslau of Florida; two brothers-in-law: Rev. Gene (Pat) Glade of Mankato, MN, and Joel (Carol) Glade of North Mankato, MN; and several nieces and nephews.

Ron was welcomed into heaven by his granddaughters, Rachel Oetken and Lisa Oetken as well as his parents: Herbert and Lillian Schroeder; his father and mother-in-law: Erwin and Ella Glade; and his in laws: Lyle Boslau, Frederick Glade, and Carol Glade.
